How Team GB3 Began…

‘I think I want to do an Ironman Graham!’ 9 words that inspired Team GB3 into existence. At the time Joe Elding, GB3’s Technical Director, was looking to achieve something significant and raise money for cancer charities. He’s like that. Not your average Joe.

You see Joe has a quote on his Skype account that reads like this…

YOU’VE NEVER LIVED UNTIL YOU’VE ALMOST DIED,
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT,
LIFE HAS TRULY A FLAVOUR,
THE PROTECTED SHALL NEVER KNOW!

Lets go back to May 1997.

Joe had just been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Admitted to The Christie hospital in Manchester, the team there showed just how good they are and how far they have come; Joe’s cancer was treated successfully, by all accounts Joe’s life should have a great flavour (see above quote).

Sixteen years later. July 2013.

Inspired by his friend Joe Duckworth, and in very good health, Joe is thinking about giving something back to the people who gave him a new lease of life.

Joe asked me ‘If I do the Ironman and get sponsorship for The Christie, can GB3 help in any way?’

Cue Team GB3.

When Marie (Mrs B) & I set up GB3 Limited we wanted the company to be more than just a place people worked. It had to be fun and about something bigger than just making money. It’s frenetic getting a business off the ground; 9 months in and we’d lost sight of this aim in the competing pack of winning business, managing cash flow, recruiting new staff and keeping customers happy. It was time to put things back into order.

We agreed to sponsor Joe in his endeavour and created ‘Team GB3’ to be a home for our community involvement. We decided to have a charity of the year to support and, alongside The Christie, we chose Rosemere Cancer Foundation (Based at Royal Preston Hospital).

We made a video that tells Joe’s story, it ended with the words ‘My name’s Joe and I’m a future Ironman’. Never in doubt.

July 2014.

Joe crosses the line to the words ‘Joe Elding, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!’

Team GB3 is about giving something back.
